Does Wearing Hats Contribute To Hair Loss?

When it comes to hats and hair thinning there are a lot of conflicting opinions out there. This is why we thought we’d do a roundup of the viewpoints that pertain to this argument, so our readership can weigh up the various arguments and decide for themselves. Do hats contribute to hair loss?

OPINION 1: Hats alone do not cause hair loss/alopecia

The abounding opinion is that the casual link of if hats contribute to hair loss, is too flimsy to be substantiated. The proponents of this opinion normally point towards the fact that hair thinning is very seldom the result of a single lifestyle choice, and is normally caused by a combination of stress, diet and the effect of hormones or medication.

OPINION 2: Constant hat wearing does contribute to hair thinning

One of the main thought processes behind whether hats contribute to hair loss is the friction causes by wearing tight hats can cause hair to become damaged and more easily breakable, which places it in the category of hair fall called ‘traction alopecia’ along with tight buns, braids and other hairstyles that puts undue strain on the hair follicle. Additionally, the human scalp also requires proper circulation in order to bring nutrients to the hair follicles. Tight caps and close-fitting woollen hats could potentially impede this process.

As you can tell both of these opinions have merit, which is why we chose to present it here. While it is up to you to decide which camp you fall in, we do have some recommendations that will help to ensure that you do not exacerbate any hair fall tendencies when you do choose to wear a hat.

The safest way to wear a hat

If you do suffer from hair loss, but would still like to wear a hat on occasion, we recommend that you adhere to the following:
  • Choose the right kind of hat: The best kind of hat for individuals who suffer from alopecia is made from 100% natural fibres (e.g. cotton or wool), does not constrict the head in any way and allows the scalp to breathe.
  • Don’t wear it all the time: Continuous wear is not a great idea if you are concerned about traction alopecia, so we recommend that you take some time out once you are indoors and no longer require protection from the sun or cold.
  • Clean it regularly: This is particularly pertinent in the summertime when our heads tend to sweat a lot and the resultant sebum and sweat collects on the rim and inside of caps and hats. This kind of residue irritates the scalp and could exacerbate any existing scalp issues you have. The best course of action is to clean your hat/cap regularly to ensure that no irritants remain on the surface.

Alopecia-approved headwear

Now that we’ve discussed the various viewpoints pertaining to hats and hair loss, we’d like to point out that there are various alopecia-approved headwear options available on the market for those individuals who suffer from hair thinning but who would still like to make a style statement or protect themselves from the elements. The American National Alopecia Areata Foundation (NAAF) website lists a great selection of products and vendors that have been approved according to their stringent requirements. This includes 100% cotton caps, soft hats, turbans, special swimming hats and more.

Find out why your hair is falling

If you are unsure whether your hair is thinning due to regular hat wearing you may have to take a closer look at your lifestyle and the reasons for your hair loss. The first step in the process to identifying your hair restoration options is to ascertain why your hair is falling. At Advanced Hair Studio UAE, we offer Advanced Hair Check, a scientific approach using advanced technology and state-of-the-art instruments, to answer questions related to hair loss, thinning and overall scalp condition.

It took me 1 Year to decide whether I wanted to go through with the hair restoration procedure using a Natural Looking Hair piece. I did a lot of research and consulted with many people who had done the procedure.

I was convinced to go ahead due to the information session / in-depth knowledge and the excellent customer service skills of Sanjay- the manager.

I did the procedure 1 month ago and I can honestly say that it was the best decision ever. Advanced Hair Studio provides the best quality for the Hair Pieces. The staff takes the time to understand what you are looking for as a customer. They style your hair based on your facial structure and I must truly admit that their stylists are pure Artists! My favourite stylist is Mohamad from Lebanon. He does magic with his hands and I am always thrilled with the new styles/ suggestions he provides.

I must admit that AHS is on the more expensive side if you were to consider the other competitors in Dubai. However, it is all worth every penny spent! You will not regret it.

Do not over think it. Just go ahead an do the procedure. You will evolve into a whole new person! Believe me! :-)

I started losing my hair in my mid-twenties and in spite of trying all sorts of treatments it gradually got worse and worse. By my late twenties I started cutting my hair short. Whenever I tried to grow it, it used to look a mess and was impossible to style because of my receding and thinning. I was looking at doing a hair transplant for a while, but I kept delaying it in hope that there was some alternative.

When I was in my mid-thirties I first came across AHS. I was a bit skeptical but I thought I’d find out what they could do. I was expecting a sales pitch but what I learned about hair loss and hair restoration from them was presented in a straightforward and logical way, without lots of medical terminology. They take time to explain the root cause of the problem and explore all the different treatments.

I decided to go ahead with the treatment and as it turns out, having AHS fix my hair was one of the best decisions I ever made. I still cannot believe how good my results are. I just wish I’d done it 10 years earlier rather than wasting so much time (and hair!). I would urge anyone who is thinking of doing something to check them out.
